Major Arcana: Archetypal Compiler-Phase Guide

The Major Arcana

A syntactic compiler-stage reference for twenty-two cards organized as twenty executable phases

The Major Arcana defines the syntax through which an operation becomes structurally executable. Each card functions as a compiler stage that establishes, transforms, tests, or completes one necessary relation within a developing process. The sequence supplies the operative grammar; the concrete conditions encountered while that grammar runs belong to the runtime field described by the Minor Arcana.

Major Arcana = syntactic compiler stage  ·  Minor Arcana = runtime state  ·  Court Card = processor mode

A Major card identifies the syntactic transformation that makes a class of executable activity possible. A Minor card identifies the concrete state through which that compiled instruction is running. A Court card identifies the mode of agency receiving, expressing, integrating, or structuring the information. Orientation tells us whether the Major instruction remains legible as unbound compiler syntax or becomes bound to a macrocosmic or microcosmic runtime vector.

0 + 1: The Initial Syntactic Basis

The Fool and the Magician establish the minimum binary distinction required for executable development. The Fool supplies 0: open, uncommitted capacity from which an operation can be instantiated. The Magician supplies 1: the first directed assertion that binds capacity to an operator, a method, and an intended result.

Together, 0 and 1 create the initial syntax of process: the distinction between available possibility and instantiated operation. Every subsequent Major Arcana stage receives that executable basis and develops what the operation can structurally become.

0 · The Fool = executable capacity  →  1 · The Magician = executable assertion

The Twenty-Phase Architecture

The Fool and the Magician jointly constitute Phase 1: the 0/1 syntactic basis required to instantiate an executable operation. The Fool therefore supplies part of the first phase without adding a separate phase to the count.

Phases 1–10 assemble the operable local interface from 0 + I through X, establishing the micro-scale (−) capacity of processing. Phases 11–20 run from XI through XX and stabilize global operations at the macro-scale (+); XXI, the World, presents the integrated global system produced when that twentieth phase resolves.

Phases 1–10: local interface / micro-scale (−)  →  Phases 11–20: global system / macro-scale (+)  →  XXI: stabilized whole

Orientation Logic

Orientation determines where the card's unchanged mechanism is expressed. (+) runs macrocosmically, (−) runs microcosmically, and (0) reads the mechanism before either runtime direction is assigned.

Upright (+)

The mechanism runs macrocosmically through the outer field: events, relationships, systems, and material conditions.

Expand definition

Upright binds the card's compiler instruction to an extensive runtime expression. The card acts through the larger situation surrounding the local agent.

Reversed (−)

The same mechanism runs microcosmically through the inner field: attention, identity, memory, emotion, and embodied experience.

Expand definition

Reversed binds the card's compiler instruction to an intensive runtime expression. The card acts through the local organization of the agent.

Neutral / Sideways (0)

The mechanism remains active as unbound compiler syntax, independent of either polarized runtime direction.

Expand definition

Neutral names the executable operation itself. It identifies the syntactic function that makes a class of experience intelligible before that function becomes a macrocosmic or microcosmic runtime variable.

Phase 1 of 20, shared with I · Syntactic Basis / Zero Declaration

0. The Fool

Declares the open capacity from which execution can begin

The Fool supplies the zero-term of the compiler sequence: open, uncommitted availability capacity. It clears or suspends prior coordinates so that possibility becomes addressable and a new operation can be instantiated. As 0, the Fool establishes the available field upon which an executable distinction can be made.

Input: undifferentiated capacity  →  Output: open execution context (0)
OrientationExecutable Reading
Upright (+)The agent enters an outer field whose conditions will reveal the available path through direct encounter, movement, and experiment.
Reversed (−)Awareness releases an inherited internal commitment and becomes available for self-renewal, redefinition, or a new subjective beginning.
Neutral / Sideways (0)The compiler opens a fresh execution context prior to the assignment of a trajectory or runtime variable.
Phase 1 of 20, shared with 0 · Syntactic Basis / One Declaration

I. The Magician

Instantiates the first directed executable operation

The Magician supplies the one-term of the compiler sequence, which in this case would be directed executable assertion. It selects from the Fool's availability capacity and binds agency, instrument, operator, and intended result into a causal instruction. As 1, the Magician converts available possibility into the first instantiated operation from which structured development can proceed.

Input: open execution context (0)  →  Output: instantiated causal operation (1)
OrientationExecutable Reading
Upright (+)Agency arranges outer resources, techniques, communications, and actions into a method capable of producing an observable result.
Reversed (−)Agency coordinates attention, intention, language, memory, and internal skill into a consciously directed subjective operation.
Neutral / Sideways (0)The compiler binds input, operator, and output into an executable causal statement: apply A to produce B.
Phase 2 of 20 · Local Rewrite / Latent Signal Parser

II. The High Priestess

Parses information carried beneath the immediately visible surface

The High Priestess receives data whose pattern has not yet become explicit. She holds the signal in sufficient stillness for hidden relations, absences, timing, and contextual meaning to become legible.

Input: visible data carrying latent relations  →  Output: recognized underlying pattern
OrientationExecutable Reading
Upright (+)The mechanism reads patterns distributed across an environment, relationship, institution, or collective field and identifies the structure operating beneath appearances.
Reversed (−)The mechanism receives dreams, memory, bodily knowledge, intuition, and implicit cognition as data within the internal field.
Neutral / Sideways (0)The compiler preserves latent information and parses its relations until a coherent pattern can be distinguished.
Phase 3 of 20 · Generative Operator

III. The Empress

Generates form by supplying the conditions that allow it to grow

The Empress converts recognized potential into a generative field. Resources circulate, conditions become fertile, and an emerging form receives the nourishment, time, space, and continuity required for self-sustaining development.

Phase 7 of 20 · Mode Switch / Directed Execution

VII. The Chariot

Coordinates competing vectors into directed motion

The Chariot changes the system from selection into execution. Forces that pull in different directions receive a shared command structure, allowing commitment to become trajectory and trajectory to become measurable movement.

Input: committed aim plus competing forces  →  Output: coordinated vector and sustained advance
OrientationExecutable Reading

Reversed (−)The mechanism aligns inner drives, competing motives, attention, and emotional force into a coherent personal direction.
Neutral / Sideways (0)The compiler switches the system from deliberation into execution by subordinating multiple vectors to one governing trajectory.
Phase 8 of 20 · Force Modulation Operator

VIII. Strength

Regulates intensity through feedback, proportion, and sustained contact

Strength makes force governable by adjusting its amplitude. Instinct, pressure, desire, anger, courage, and endurance become usable when the system can meet them directly and modulate their expression with precision.

Input: concentrated instinct or force  →  Output: regulated and sustainable power
OrientationExecutable Reading
Upright (+)The mechanism shapes force within an outer relationship or situation through measured pressure, patience, timing, and responsive restraint.
Reversed (−)The mechanism metabolizes inner instinct, fear, anger, desire, or vulnerability until its energy can participate in conscious action.

Phase 9 of 20 · Mode Switch / Reflective Inspection

IX. The Hermit

Redirects processing from participation toward inspection

The Hermit withdraws attention from active circulation so the system can inspect its own accumulated knowledge. Distance reduces noise, isolates the governing question, and converts lived experience into a portable source of orientation.

Input: accumulated experience inside an active field  →  Output: distilled and locally verifiable guidance
OrientationExecutable Reading
Upright (+)The mechanism creates distance from the surrounding field and establishes a concentrated point of observation, expertise, or guidance within it.
Reversed (−)The mechanism directs attention through memory, conscience, private inquiry, and internal synthesis until a personally verifiable signal emerges.
Neutral / Sideways (0)The compiler switches processing from participation to inspection and distills experience into a local reference signal.
Phase 10 of 20 · Topology Shift / Cyclical Permutation

X. Wheel of Fortune

Repositions every element by rotating the field that relates them

The Wheel of Fortune changes the topology of the active system. A shift in timing, cycle, environment, or relation moves each element into a new position, thereby changing what each element can reach, influence, or become.

Input: established positions within a cyclical field  →  Output: permuted positions and newly available relations
OrientationExecutable Reading
Upright (+)An outer cycle, historical turn, material condition, or collective change repositions the agent and alters the field of available action.

Neutral / Sideways (0)The compiler rotates the field, permutes relative positions, and produces a new adjacency map among existing elements.
Phase 11 of 20 · Global Stabilization / Equilibrium Interface

XI. Justice

Compares actual output against the governing relation and issues correction

Justice makes consequence legible through accurate accounting. Causes, actions, rules, obligations, and outcomes enter the same frame, allowing the system to identify the correction required for functional equilibrium.

Input: action, outcome, and governing relation  →  Output: accounted consequence and corrective instruction
OrientationExecutable Reading
Upright (+)The mechanism applies terms, evidence, standards, contracts, boundaries, or proportional consequence within an outer system.

Phase 12 of 20 · Topology Shift / Reference-Frame Inversion

XII. The Hanged Man

Suspends execution and inverts the frame through which the system is read

The Hanged Man holds the current operation in suspension so its reference frame can reverse. Relations that appeared fixed become visible from the opposite direction, and the pause creates access to solutions excluded by the previous orientation.

Input: saturated operation inside a fixed reference frame  →  Output: suspended execution and inverted relation map
OrientationExecutable Reading
Upright (+)The mechanism pauses external execution so roles, dependencies, priorities, and visible relationships can reorganize around a changed point of view.
Reversed (−)The mechanism suspends an internal habit of interpretation and reverses the relation among self, value, sacrifice, desire, and control.
Neutral / Sideways (0)The compiler halts the current instruction and inverts the reference frame, transforming what the system defines as above, below, cause, and consequence.
Phase 13 of 20 · Rupture / Termination Operator

XIII. Death

Terminates an obsolete configuration and releases its constituents

Death ends the continuity of a form whose organizing pattern has completed its function. The released material, energy, memory, and agency become available for recompilation under a different structure.

Input: completed or exhausted configuration  →  Output: released constituents and irreversible transition
OrientationExecutable Reading

Phase 14 of 20 · Integration / Calibration Operator

XIV. Temperance

Recombines transformed constituents into a stable proportion

Temperance establishes a viable relation among elements that have survived transformation. Rate, dosage, timing, exchange, and mutual adjustment create a mixture capable of carrying more complexity than any isolated part.

Input: released and transformed constituents  →  Output: calibrated composite with stable circulation
OrientationExecutable Reading

Phase 15 of 20 · Constraint / Attractor Operator

XV. The Devil

Concentrates behavior around a binding loop of value, appetite, and consequence

The Devil makes an attractor visible by showing how pleasure, fear, dependency, incentive, identity, and repetition bind agency to a particular circuit. The card identifies the rule that keeps the loop compelling and therefore structurally persistent.

Input: desire plus reinforcing condition  →  Output: repeating constraint loop and concentrated attachment
OrientationExecutable Reading
Upright (+)Contracts, incentives, material dependencies, social roles, power relations, or environmental rewards concentrate outer behavior around a repeating circuit.
Reversed (−)Identification, appetite, shame, fear, fantasy, compulsion, or internal reward concentrates subjective energy around a repeating circuit.
Neutral / Sideways (0)The compiler binds behavior to a reinforced attractor and exposes the dependency through which the loop maintains its own continuation.
Phase 16 of 20 · Rupture / Structural Decompilation

XVI. The Tower

Decompiles an architecture whose contradiction has become load-bearing

The Tower executes the contradiction that an existing structure has been containing. Once the accumulated conflict exceeds the architecture's capacity, the system loses its former arrangement and exposes the assumptions, relations, and materials from which it was built.

Input: structure carrying an unsustainable contradiction  →  Output: rupture, exposure, and unbound components
OrientationExecutable Reading
Upright (+)An outer structure, institution, arrangement, status, or material system breaks under the contradiction embedded in its operating conditions.
Reversed (−)An internal worldview, identity architecture, defense, assumption, or organizing story collapses under a contradiction it can no longer contain.
Neutral / Sideways (0)The compiler deconstructs an architecture that can no longer support its own output and returns its components for inspection and reassembly.
Phase 17 of 20 · Integration / Signal Reacquisition

XVII. The Star

Reestablishes a coherent reference signal after rupture

The Star restores orientation by locating a signal stable enough to guide reconstruction. The system regains continuity through direct contact with what remains reliable, life-giving, and capable of sustaining long-range alignment.

Input: exposed field after structural rupture  →  Output: reacquired reference signal and reconstructive direction
OrientationExecutable Reading
Upright (+)The mechanism restores outer orientation through shared trust, visible continuity, ecological support, communal truth, or a durable long-range direction.
Reversed (−)The mechanism restores an inner reference point through sincerity, embodied continuity, private hope, self-recognition, or renewed access to personal meaning.
Neutral / Sideways (0)The compiler reacquires a coherent signal and uses it as the reference coordinate for reconstruction after rupture.
Phase 18 of 20 · Uncertainty / Noisy-Signal Operator

XVIII. The Moon

Processes incomplete information through provisional models

The Moon operates where the available signal remains real but partial. Perception fills gaps, competing interpretations remain live, and navigation proceeds through iteration, sensitivity, and revision as additional data enters the field.

Input: partial signal plus ambiguous conditions  →  Output: provisional model and iterative navigation
OrientationExecutable Reading
Upright (+)The outer field supplies shifting cues, obscured motives, indirect evidence, and multiple plausible paths that require ongoing observation and revision.
Reversed (−)Dreams, memory, intuition, fear, desire, and projection generate incomplete internal models through which subjective reality is interpreted.

Input: provisional model plus sufficient signal  →  Output: visible coherence and confirmable result
OrientationExecutable Reading
Upright (+)Clarity becomes externalized through observable feedback, public recognition, shared understanding, material confirmation, or collective vitality.
Reversed (−)Clarity becomes internally available as integrated self-recognition, embodied confidence, lucid understanding, or restored vital coherence.
Neutral / Sideways (0)The compiler increases signal resolution until the system's operative state becomes legible, verifiable, and available for shared reference.
Phase 20 of 20 · Integration / Recursive Evaluation

XX. Judgement

Recalls the accumulated run and evaluates readiness for a new recursive layer

Judgement gathers the outputs of the completed process into one field of evaluation. Previously separated actions, consequences, identities, and realizations become simultaneously available, allowing the system to answer for the whole pattern and reorganize around what that pattern now requires.

Input: accumulated outputs of the full operation  →  Output: total evaluation and reactivated agency
OrientationExecutable Reading
Upright (+)Results enter a collective, historical, relational, or accountable field and reorganize the agent's outer role, obligation, or call to action.

Twenty-Phase Cycle Complete · Stabilized Global System

XXI. The World

Integrates the completed sequence into a stable and exportable whole

The World closes the compiler cycle by coordinating every transformed constituent within one functioning totality. The completed system can now persist, circulate, and serve as a single integrated unit inside a larger order.

Input: evaluated and reactivated total process  →  Output: closed loop and exportable integrated system
OrientationExecutable Reading
Upright (+)The integrated system functions in the outer world as an embodied result, completed work, durable ecology, social role, or coherent institution.
